You thought nobody noticed
This is what you need for the journey
Write about sleeping
I want to return to that place
You received a letter
It's what was left behind
Things to do on a Tuesday
Write what you try to forget
Write about a time you changed your mind
Once, with another woman …
Something stolen
While you were driving
How to get started writing? Write.
Write about the best of intentions
Write about a time you wanted to leave but couldn't
You're waiting...
Write about taking risks
There is a memory of a ____________
Write about a bed
The last we heard
You got it second hand
Natural talent and all the breaks in the world notwithstanding, to become good at anything you've got to do the drills.
"You have to sing every day so you can build up to being, you know, Amazingly Brilliant."
~ Mick Jagger
Smell is the one sense that can evoke complete memories...
No one is more qualified than you are to write what you want to write.
A sunrise can be as faded as the dying roses on the far edge of the garden, or as lively and fresh as the pink skin of a baby.
Write one true thing
This is a prayer
Thoughts from a Queen-sized bed
I want to return to that place
You received a letter
It's what was left behind

Place as Character

The Ink Spot
Register at: San Diego Writers, Ink
Place can have a role in fiction and nonfiction as memorable as any of the characters who populate the story. Think of Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha, Dillard’s Tinker Creek, Steinbeck’s California. Every human event happens somewhere and the reader wants to know what that somewhere is like. Place grounds the story, sets the scene and creates the background where story plays out. Place influences how characters speak, eat and make love; it shapes their beliefs, values and moral choices. History and memory are rooted in place and the map our of psyche is found in the geography of our past.
This workshop will explore the role of place in writing. We’ll look at how it influences the voice and perspective of the writer and discuss ways for the writer to render real or fictional place through description, detail, and imagery. For all writers, fiction, nonfiction and poetry.

Saturday, May 31, 10 am - 4 pm
Register at: UCSD Extension
If you want to write a novel, screenplay, short story--if you want to write anything, the first step is to start writing. It's the next step that's the tricky one and the one where most would-be writers trip up: keep writing. In this stimulating, fun and fast-paced workshop, you'll learn how to do just that. You will learn to practice the craft of writing through in-group exercises and spontaneous discussions. You will learn: how to get started and keep going; the ten daily habits that make a good writer; what stuck looks like and how to get unstuck; how to tell when the critic, censor, or editor is present and what to do about it; how to say yes to the Muse; how to discover what you really want to write about; and how to name yourself "writer" and be part of a writing community.
